Free Online Tools for Australia
Australia is the tidiest of the English-speaking markets to calculate for. GST is a flat 10% everywhere, with no state or city variation, so a price works out the same in Perth and Hobart. Metrication was finished rather than abandoned, so kilometres, kilograms and Celsius are used for everything, including height and body weight. Paper is A4. The parts that are genuinely Australian are superannuation, franking credits, and a financial year that starts on 1 July.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. GST is a flat 10% set federally, with no state or council additions, which makes Australia far simpler than the United States or Canada — there a price changes when you cross a border. Some things are GST-free rather than taxed at zero-nothing: most basic food, medical services and education. To take GST out of a tax-inclusive price you divide by 11, not by 10, because the tax is one eleventh of the gross. That divide-by-eleven shortcut is the one worth remembering.
When your GST turnover reaches 75,000 in a twelve-month period, or 150,000 if you are a non-profit. Rideshare and taxi drivers must register from the first dollar, regardless of turnover. Once registered you charge GST, claim credits on your purchases, and lodge a Business Activity Statement — quarterly for most small businesses, monthly above a higher threshold. You also need an ABN. Confirm current thresholds on ato.gov.au rather than relying on any calculator, this one included.
It is inherited from British colonial administration, which used a mid-year accounting period, and it stuck after Federation while Britain itself kept April. So the Australian year runs 1 July to 30 June, tax returns are due 31 October for individuals lodging themselves, and any threshold or rate change generally takes effect on 1 July. If you deal with British or Indian businesses you are working across three different year-ends at once, which is worth being deliberate about on invoices.
The Superannuation Guarantee is a percentage of your ordinary time earnings that your employer must pay into your fund on top of your wage — not out of it. The rate has been legislated upward in steps, reaching 12% from 1 July 2025. It is paid at least quarterly, and unpaid super is a debt your employer owes you, recoverable through the ATO. Because it compounds untouched for decades, the compound interest calculator is a reasonable way to see what a change in contributions does over thirty years.
They stop company profit being taxed twice. When an Australian company pays tax and then pays you a dividend, the dividend carries a credit for tax already paid. You declare the grossed-up amount as income and subtract the credit from your own tax bill. If your marginal rate is below the company rate the credit can exceed the tax owed, and in Australia the excess is refunded in cash — which is unusual internationally and is why franking matters so much to retirees on low taxable incomes. This is dividend imputation; most countries do not refund the excess.
Essentially none in daily life. Australia completed metrication through the 1970s rather than stopping halfway, so unlike Britain and Canada people give their height in centimetres and their weight in kilograms, roads are in kilometres, and recipes and ovens are metric. Imperial survives in a few trade corners — pipe and screen sizes in inches, some marine and aviation units — but you will not meet stones or Fahrenheit. If a figure looks imperial it has usually come from an American source.
An offset is a transaction account linked to your loan whose balance is subtracted from the loan balance before interest is calculated. Keep 20,000 in it against a 500,000 loan and you are charged interest on 480,000, while the money stays yours and spendable. Your scheduled repayment does not change; more of it goes to principal, so the loan finishes sooner. A redraw facility looks similar but the money is a prepayment you ask for back, which can be restricted. Neither is modelled by the calculator here — it shows the plain repayment, so treat an offset as an improvement on that figure rather than something it accounts for.
A4, the international standard at 210 by 297mm — the same as Britain, Europe and India, and not the Letter size used in the United States and Canada. A document sent from an American office will be 216 by 279mm, wider and shorter, so it leaves narrow side margins and a gap at the bottom when printed here. Choose A4 in the PDF tools on this site, and use "fit to page" for anything that arrives from North America.
