Where people use it

  • Writers and bloggers aiming for a target length.
  • Marketers keeping meta descriptions and ad copy inside their limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The counting happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded, stored or logged, so you can safely paste confidential work.

How is a word counted?

A word is any run of characters separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word, which matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count.

How is reading time worked out?

Reading time uses 200 words per minute and speaking time uses 130 words per minute. Both are common averages for adult readers in English; your own pace may differ.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?

Both are shown separately. Character limits on social platforms usually include spaces, while some form fields do not, so it helps to see the two numbers side by side.

Can I use it for essays and assignments?

Yes. It is often used to check essay and assignment limits. Keep in mind that your institution may count footnotes, headings or references differently from a plain word count.
