Why nothing is uploaded
A screen recording usually contains more than you intended — a notification, an open tab, a client's data. Sending that to someone else's server to be processed is a poor trade for a convenience you do not need. Here the browser's own recorder assembles the file locally and hands it straight to your downloads folder.
Getting the sound right
There are two separate audio sources and they behave differently. Your microphone is a permission this page asks for, and it works in every case. What the computer is playing comes from the sharing box the browser shows, and only when you pick a tab and tick share tab audio. Choosing "Entire screen" generally loses system sound altogether. That restriction is set by the browser.
Why WebM and not MP4
WebM is what browsers can record natively. Producing MP4 in a web page means shipping a video encoder of several megabytes and re-encoding everything, which is slower and worse quality. WebM plays everywhere, uploads to YouTube directly, and converts in seconds if you truly need MP4.
Before a long recording
- Close anything that might show a notification.
- Record a ten-second test and play it back — check the sound is there before the real take.
- Share a single tab rather than the whole screen when you can; it is sharper and safer.
- For anything over twenty minutes, record in parts. The file is held in memory until you stop.
