Momentum and impulse are the same unit

A newton-second and a kilogram-metre per second are identical. A newton is a kg·m/s², so a newton-second is a kg·m/s. The two names survive because they answer different questions: momentum is what a moving object has, impulse is what a force applied over time gives it. Impulse equals the change in momentum, which is why the units must match.

Why this matters for anything that hits something

The same change in momentum can be delivered by a large force briefly or a small force for longer. That single fact is the whole design principle behind crumple zones, airbags, climbing ropes and packaging — none of them reduce the momentum that has to be absorbed, they stretch the time so the force comes down.

Momentum is not energy

Momentum is mv; kinetic energy is ½mv². Double the speed and momentum doubles but energy quadruples. A vehicle at 60 km/h carries twice the momentum of one at 30 but four times the energy, which is why stopping distances grow so steeply.

The imperial oddity

The slug is the imperial unit of mass, about 14.59 kg — defined as the mass that one pound-force accelerates at one foot per second squared. It exists because pounds usually measure weight, and momentum needs mass.
