The pattern is the data. Scanning it reads your link directly, with nothing in between — so there is no service that can expire it, start charging for it, or count who scanned it. That is worth knowing, because many free generators quietly point the code at their own redirect first.
Getting one that scans reliably
- Keep the quiet border. Scanners need the blank margin to find the code at all.
- Keep the contrast strong. Dark pattern on a light background; the reverse often fails.
- Print it large enough. Roughly 2 cm for something held in the hand, far more for a poster.
- Encode a short link. Less data means a coarser pattern, and a coarser pattern scans from further away.
- Test it before printing — with more than one phone.

PNG for screens and documents. SVG for anything printed — it is drawn from shapes rather than pixels, so it stays perfectly sharp on a poster or a banner at any size.
It adds redundancy so the code still reads when part of it is dirty, creased or covered by a logo. Higher correction means a denser pattern. Use High if you are putting a logo in the middle, Medium otherwise.
Up to about 4,000 characters, but long content makes a dense pattern that phones struggle with. For anything past a couple of hundred characters, encode a link to the content instead.
Yes. Android and iOS both read the WiFi format and offer to join the network, which saves reading a long password aloud. Remember that anyone who photographs the code has your password.
