Why an offset alone is not enough

"India is five and a half hours ahead of the UK" is true for part of the year and wrong for the rest, because the UK moves and India does not. The gap is 5:30 in winter and 4:30 in summer. Any conversion that stores a fixed offset per country will be an hour out for months at a time.

This uses your browser's timezone database, which knows the actual rules and applies them to the date you choose. Change the date across a daylight saving boundary and the answers move — that is correct behaviour, not a bug.

The zones that are not whole hours

  • India and Sri Lanka — UTC+5:30.
  • Nepal — UTC+5:45, the only zone at a quarter-hour.
  • Parts of Australia — UTC+9:30, and +10:30 in summer.
  • Newfoundland — UTC−3:30.

Finding an hour that works

The planner marks each hour against normal working time in every city you add. With India and the US west coast there is often no green row at all — the honest answer is that someone has to take a call outside their working day, and it is better to know that before you send the invitation than after.

Is daylight saving handled?

Yes. The conversion uses your browser's own timezone database, so a city that is on summer time gets its summer offset for the date you pick — and the same city gives a different answer in January and July. That is the point of picking a date rather than only a time.

Why does India show a half-hour offset?

Because IST is UTC+5:30. Several zones are not whole hours from UTC — India and Sri Lanka at +5:30, Nepal at +5:45, parts of Australia at +9:30. Anything that assumes whole hours gets these wrong.

How does the meeting planner decide what is reasonable?

It marks the hours that fall inside normal working time in every city you have added, and shades the ones that are merely tolerable. If nothing is green, there is no hour that suits everyone — which is worth knowing before you send the invite.

Why does the day sometimes change?

Because a large offset crosses midnight. 9am in Los Angeles is 9:30pm the same day in India, and 8pm in Los Angeles is already the next morning there. The day is shown next to every time for this reason.

Are these times authoritative?

They come from the timezone database in your own browser, which is the same source most operating systems use. Rules do change — countries alter daylight saving with little notice — so for something critical, confirm with the person you are meeting.
