The look, and why it works
Heavy condensed capitals with a black outline became the meme convention for a practical reason: it is the only treatment that stays readable over a bright sky, a dark shadow and a busy background all at once. Thin or unoutlined text disappears into half the pictures you would want to use.
Getting it right
- Short lines. Long text shrinks to fit and stops being readable on a phone.
- Keep the outline at five or six — enough to separate the letters from anything behind them.
- Move a line down the image rather than shrinking it, if it is covering the subject.
- Text wraps on its own; the size slider changes how big the letters are, not where they break.
