What "signing" means here
This puts an image of your signature onto the page. In law that is the same as printing a document, signing it and scanning it back in — which is exactly what most everyday paperwork asks for, and what this saves you doing. It is not a digital signature in the technical sense: that is a cryptographic certificate issued by a licensed authority, which binds the signature to your identity and proves the file has not been altered since. No web page can issue one, and any that claims to should be treated carefully.
Why doing it in the browser matters
The documents people sign are offer letters, rent agreements, bank forms and contracts. Uploading those to an unknown server to have a picture pasted on them is a poor trade. Here the file is opened and rewritten on your own machine, and closing the tab is the end of it.
Getting a clean signature
- Drawing with a finger on a phone gives a better line than a mouse.
- Photographing a signature works if you sign in dark ink on white paper in good light, then let the tool drop the white out.
- Typing a name in a handwriting face is legible and consistent, though it is plainly not your hand.
- Place it a little above the line rather than on it, the way a pen would sit.
Before you send it
Open the downloaded file and look at every page you signed. Check the signature has not landed over text, and that the pages you did not touch are unchanged.
