I built this BMR Calculator because the number of people "guessing" their calorie intake is shocking. People often pick a round number like "1,500" because it sounds healthy, but they have no idea if that is too much or too little for their specific body.
Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the amount of energy your body needs just to keep your heart beating and lungs breathing—if you laid in bed all day. This tool calculates that baseline and then adds your activity level to give you your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). This is the "magic number" you need to know to actually lose weight or gain muscle.
How to Use This Tool
Honesty is the most important input here. Your BMR is mathematical; you can't "trick" it, but you can mislead the calculator easily.
- Select Gender: Men typically have higher BMR than women due to greater muscle mass on average.
- Enter Accurate Stats: Don't guess your height or weight. Even a 5lb difference changes the math.
- Choose Realistic Activity: This is where most errors happen. Walking your dog 15 minutes a day is "Lightly Active," not "Sedentary." But doing 3 workouts a week doesn't make you "Very Active" if you sit at a desk for 40 hours.
- Review the Results: Look at the "Maintenance" number. That is your target to maintain weight. Subtract 500 for weight loss, add 500 for gain.

Common Mistakes / FAQs
BMR is your metabolic rate at rest (coma level). TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is your BMR plus the calories you burn through movement and digestion. You should eat based on TDEE, not BMR, unless you are strictly bedridden.
It is generally considered accurate for about 85% of the population. However, it can underestimate BMR for very muscular people (who have higher metabolism) and overestimate for very obese individuals. It's a baseline, not a perfect medical diagnostic.
Technically, yes, you will lose weight. But it is dangerous. Eating below your BMR forces your body to break down muscle for energy, slows your metabolism, and damages organs. It is generally recommended not to go below your BMR for an extended period.

We use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, created in 1990.
Formula for Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5
Formula for Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161
Once BMR is found, we calculate TDEE by multiplying BMR by your activity factor (e.g., 1.55 for moderate activity).
